7.7 Filler Metals Used with GTAW
Gas tungsten arc welding is appropriate for use on most all weldable metals. The range of filler metals used in GTAW, therefore, is very large.

Figure 7-27 lists the American Welding Society (AWS) specification booklets that should be referred to when welding various base metals. These booklets help the welder select the appropriate filler metal, electrode, and shielding gas for performing GTAW, GMAW, or PAW on the selected type of metal.

Each “A5” specification booklet contains a list of filler metals, their suggested uses, recommended current settings, and their chemical compositions. Filler metal is available in various diameters. The filler metal can be purchased in precut lengths, usually 24″ (610mm) or 36″ (915mm), or as a continuous coil. Continuous coils of filler wire are used in semiautomatic, mechanized, or automatic welding operations. GTAW with continuous coil filler metal requires a wire feeder and a method to guide the filler metal to the weld pool. Figure 7-28 shows equipment used to feed GTAW wire.
